02 Preterite – Irregulars – Saber

Posted by Señor Jordan on Jan 17, 2009 in conjugation, grammar, irregular, preterite, verbs, year 2

This video lesson covers one of many irregular verbs in the preterite: saber (to know).  Remember that we use this verb for:
1. facts
2. information
3. ‘how to.’

Something about saber though is that like a few other verbs, it changes meaning slightly in the preterite. We’ll go over more on this later but it although you might think it translates to ‘knew’, it actually means ‘found out, learned’.

Please note that saber can also mean ‘to taste‘ in Spanish. This is not mentioned in the video, but should be noted by students.
Ex:
Present:¿Cómo sabe la comida? How does the food taste?
Preterite:
¿Cómo supo la comida?‘  How did the food taste?

Enjoy!

02 Preterite – Irregulars – Querer

Posted by Señor Jordan on Jan 9, 2009 in conjugation, grammar, irregular, preterite, verbs

This video lesson covers another irregular verb in the preteritequerer (to want).  Although this verb normally is used as ‘want’ but when used with people, it can carry the idea of ‘love’ or ‘care about’.
Ex:
Yo quiero un sándwich. I want a sandwich.
Yo quiero a mi madre. I love my mother.

In the preterite it will be ‘wanted’ or ‘loved’, but also carries another meaning that we’ll go over in a later video.

Enjoy!

02 Preterite – Irregulars – Poder

Posted by Señor Jordan on Jan 9, 2009 in conjugation, grammar, irregular, preterite, verbs, year 2

This video covers another irregular verb in the preterite: poder (to be able, can).  This verb is most popular with my students in such present tense phrases as ‘¿Puedo ir al baño?‘ (Can I go to the bathroom?) o ‘¿Puedo ir a la fuente de agua?‘ (Can I go to the water fountain?).  But of course those aren’t really useful in this video since we’re going over the preterite (a past tense) of poder.

Thanks for watching!  Enjoy!

Preterite Sheet

Posted by Señor Jordan on Dec 19, 2008 in conjugation, grammar, irregular, preterite, year 2

While you wait for the new videos, I made a Microsoft word document that will hopefully be of use to any Spanish student.

If the preterite completely baffles you or you would like a resource to help you understand it better I’ve compiled a sort of cheat sheet for you.

Please note that the vosotros/vosotras forms are included in the conjugations in case you need them. Remember that is only for ‘you all (familiar)’ in Spain.  Otherwise for ‘you all’ we use ustedes.

Click below to save the file to your computer.

Hopefully it will help you with the preterite (an incredibly complicated tense in Spanish). 🙂  My only request is that you give credit to this site if you use it.

Let me know if you have any questions, comments or suggestions.

¡Gracias!

-Sr. Jordan
