02 Preterite – Irregulars – Song!

Posted by Señor Jordan on Jan 21, 2009 in conjugation, grammar, irregular, preterite, song, verbs, year 2

To help you with remembering quite of few of those irregular verbs, I’ll share a song I learned back in high school!  This song is also on page 2 of the preterite conjugation sheet.

This song helps you remember the yo forms of some of the common irregular verbs in the preterite.  If it sounds familiar that is because it is to the tune of  ‘La cucaracha‘.

HD version with newer titles:

*Note* in this video on a verb chart, the él / ella / usted form should not have an accent on “ió” and should read “io” since “vio” and “dio” do not have accents.

old version (2008):

02 Preterite – Irregulars – traer, conducir, traducir

Posted by Señor Jordan on Jan 20, 2009 in conjugation, grammar, irregular, preterite, verbs, year 2

This video lesson covers three more irregular verbs in the preterite.  They are traer (to bring), traducir (to translate) and conducir (to drive). They are all lumped together because they follow similar patterns and are similar to decir in the preterite.  Enjoy!

01032 Vocabulario – las frutas & gustar

Posted by Señor Jordan on Jan 3, 2009 in conjugation, grammar, verbs, vocabulary, year 1

Hola. In this video lesson, we’re going to review the verb gustar as well as add on to what we learned in the previous gustar videos. What the heck. I’ll throw in some fruits too.

The names for the fruits might differ from country to country. These are more or less standard names. I have noticed that my Mexican friends use ‘el limón‘ for both ‘la lima‘ and ‘el limón‘. I find that interesting.

Enjoy!

02 Neutral Demonstratives

Posted by Señor Jordan on Dec 30, 2008 in culture, grammar, year 2

This lesson is the last lesson (for now) on the demonstratives.  Those again are:
este / esta – this
estos / estas – these
ese / esa – that
esos / esas– those
aquel / aquella – that (far)
aquellos / aquellas – those (far)

Now, since these all deal with gender… which would you use when you didn’t know the object (much less the gender) of something that you’re talking about?  For that reason we have neutral demonstratives which take the place of the general ‘this’ or ‘that’.

Let me know if you have any questions/comments/suggestions about this video lesson!

Also, this lesson mentions a Mexican television program.  For more on Chavo del Ocho, you might check this out.  To watch some clips, try this. Read more…

02 Demonstrative Pronouns

Posted by Señor Jordan on Dec 30, 2008 in grammar, year 2

This video lesson is a continuation on the demonstrative lessons.  Now, so far we’ve gone over the demonstrative adjectives:
este / esta – this
estos / estas – these
ese / esa – that
esos / esas– those
aquel / aquella – that (far)
aquellos / aquellas – those (far)

Those go before nouns to modify them. If only there were a way to get rid of the noun…[strokes chin]. Oh wait there is!

Let me know if you have any questions, comments, or suggestions about this video!

Thanks for watching! Read more…

¡Cultura! – La Navidad

Posted by Señor Jordan on Dec 25, 2008 in culture

¡FELIZ NAVIDAD!
La Navidad (or Christmas) is celebrated in many different ways depending on not only the country, but also the region. I am in no way an expert but I would love to travel to every Spanish-speaking country during holidays such as la Navidad to learn!  Below are some links that explain traditions in some places.

I did find some links that might be useful to you though… and for your enjoyment, here’s me singing ‘Feliz Navidad‘ originally sung by José Feliciano.

In English and Spanish:

In Spanish only:

José Feliciano is a prominent singer, songwriter, and guitar virtuoso from Puerto Rico. The most amazing thing about José Feliciano is that he is blind but plays guitar amazingly!

For more on José Feliciano,
http://www.josefeliciano.com

Since the tradition varies depending on the country and regions in the country, the possibilities are endless!  But here are some links you can check out for more information!

Preterite Sheet

Posted by Señor Jordan on Dec 19, 2008 in conjugation, grammar, irregular, preterite, year 2

While you wait for the new videos, I made a Microsoft word document that will hopefully be of use to any Spanish student.

If the preterite completely baffles you or you would like a resource to help you understand it better I’ve compiled a sort of cheat sheet for you.

Please note that the vosotros/vosotras forms are included in the conjugations in case you need them. Remember that is only for ‘you all (familiar)’ in Spain.  Otherwise for ‘you all’ we use ustedes.

Click below to save the file to your computer.

preterite-conjugation-sheet

Hopefully it will help you with the preterite (an incredibly complicated tense in Spanish). 🙂  My only request is that you give credit to this site if you use it.

Let me know if you have any questions, comments or suggestions.

¡Gracias!

-Sr. Jordan
